The terrorists were at our doorstep. I sat there with my son, petrified

  • Elior D.'s story

We locked all the doors of the house, put the sofa in front of the door and prayed to God

I can’t believe that it has already been a month. I will never forget October 7 as long as I live. Just a day before we were celebrating with family, preparing and discussing where to celebrate Simchat Torah [last day of the festival of Sukkot]. Who would have thought that this would be our Simchat Torah?

At 6:37, we woke up to the first siren and I was sure I was imagining it, so I almost went back to sleep. But suddenly I jumped out of bed and woke up Adir to the sounds of sirens.

At 6:44 we were still optimistic, we took a picture in the corridor of the house, we didn’t know who they [the IDF] killed and that would have prompted such a flood of red alert sirens.

Elior D. and Adir

At 6:55 there was a short period of quiet and we decided to leave, going in the direction of Adir’s sister, who lives in Ramat Shaked in the square where there were terrorists…

Adir and I live opposite the local Country Club, and we passed through Mishor Gefen street where everything was happening (in hindsight we found out that, as we were passing by, the terrorists were already there).

"At this point, nobody had realized that f*cking terrorists had entered Ofakim!!"

6:59: We called Ortal to ask her to open the gate. We didn’t even have time to ask what was happening and there was a red alert siren!!!! At 7:03 I jumped into the shower to brush my teeth and suddenly I heard a volley of gunfire. It was so strange that to begin with I couldn’t even understand what I was hearing! I called my mother hysterically to tell her that there was shooting, someone was shooting near me and she answered that most likely it was missiles. At this point, nobody had realized that f*cking terrorists had entered Ofakim!! We called the police, we called everyone in the world, we locked all the doors of the house, put the sofa in front of the door and prayed to the Creator of the Universe to help us…

In hindsight, Adir and I survived, and I thank the Creator of the Universe that those damned terrorists missed us. I have not stopped thinking about what would have happened if I had stayed at home just to brush my teeth… I believe and hope that the Messiah is on his way to us and will redeem us from the pain and suffering we are going through here! And thank you again to the Creator of the Universe who made them not see us
